A4C is creating real pathways to land ownership for young aspiring farmers in Baltimore Maryland. Every day, we’re working to strengthen our communities through our Stewardship Program and Charm City Caps Mushroom Farm. Through these programs, we offer hands-on educational opportunities while training Stewards in farm business management. Together with our Stewards, student interns, and volunteers, we grow different varieties of specialty mushrooms which we sell at local farmers markets. Proceeds from the sale of the mushrooms are re-invested in our programs. Our goal, through these activities, is to secure land ownership and build community-based micro-farms that lead to food sovereignty. We are committed to repairing the harms of the past, one micro-farm at a time. In October 2024, A4C, alongside the graduates of our first Stewardship Program, took a monumental step by purchasing our first parcel of land in West Baltimore, marking the launch of Sankofa Farm Collective.We believe land ownership is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for building generational wealth, food sovereignty, and community resilience. Our Mission We create pathways for BIPOC farmers and aspiring land stewards to become landowners, ensuring that historically marginalized communities have access to resources, training, and economic opportunities. Our Programs Stewardship Program – A one-year land stewardship initiative providing hands-on training in farming, business development, and cooperative/collective ownership. Participants gain practical skills, entrepreneurial knowledge, and direct access to land and business opportunities. Charm City Caps – Our indoor mushroom farm serves as a training ground and revenue generator, equipping Stewards with skills in mycoculture, sales, and farm management while funding our land acquisition efforts. ♻️ Spent Mushroom Compost Initiative – We repurpose nutrient-rich mushroom compost to support local farmers, gardeners, and urban green spaces, promoting regenerative agriculture and soil health. Sankofa Farm Collective – Our first land acquisition, co-owned by land stewards, is an incubator for sustainable farm businesses and community-driven agriculture. Education & Advocacy – We provide workshops and community engagement initiatives to promote land justice, economic empowerment, and food security. Why It Matters Black and Brown farmers have lost over 90% of their land due to systemic barriers. A4C is changing this narrative by ensuring that land stays in the hands of the people who cultivate it. Designed to address the historic barriers to land access and agricultural opportunity, the program equips participants with the tools to build thriving farm businesses and food justice initiatives in their own communities. At the heart of the program is Charm City Caps, our indoor mushroom farm and training hub. Stewards gain direct experience in mushroom cultivation, value-added production, mycelium composting, and sustainable farm management. They also receive a monthly stipend as they meet key program milestones. Each Steward joins a supportive cohort and is matched with experienced mentors from the nonprofit and business sectors. Through a comprehensive curriculum—including community building, fundraising, business planning, and land stewardship—participants gain the knowledge and support needed to succeed. Upon successful completion of the program, Stewards transition into cooperative land ownership and establish micro-farm collectives that grow fresh food, create income-generating opportunities, and build long-term community wealth. Acres4Change envisions expanding this model to support home and small business ownership, helping to close the racial wealth gap through property ownership and local food systems.
