Acres4Change was founded to confront the growing racial wealth gap—a movement grounded in innovation, equity, and the power of collective action. Unknowingly, we were following in the footsteps of Fannie Lou Hamer and the Black farm collectives she established, reaffirming that our work is part of a much longer and deeply rooted legacy.
In 1969, Hamer—a fearless civil rights leader—founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative (FFC) in Mississippi. She recognized that true freedom required economic independence. FFC provided Black farmers and families with land, food security, and economic opportunity in the face of systemic racism and poverty. Like Acres4Change, her vision was built on self-sufficiency, collective ownership, and the empowerment of Black communities through agriculture. Hamer’s work reminds us that the fight for economic justice is not new—it is a continuation of the struggle for liberation.
It has been 160 years since the last enslaved people were freed in the U.S., yet economic justice remains out of reach for many Black communities. Instead of reparations for slavery, Black Americans faced segregation, systemic racism, redlining, and wealth-stripping policies that deepened economic inequality. The racial wealth gap has not only persisted but expanded since the Civil Rights Movement due to systemic economic barriers, discriminatory policies, and cycles of wealth deprivation. While income gaps have remained relatively steady, wealth gaps have grown significantly, making it harder for Black families to pass down assets and financial security to future generations.
We are pouring our wealth upward, enriching the rich while our communities struggle—but WE have the power to change this narrative. By redirecting our spending away from massive corporations and back into our own communities, we can build lasting economic strength. Models for collective wealth-building already exist: Susu, or Rotating Savings and Credit Associations, allow communities to pool and circulate funds. Community Land Trusts ensure long-term affordability for housing, farming, and
economic development through collective land ownership. Cooperative
businesses and worker-owned enterprises empower individuals with
shared ownership and decision-making. Crowdfunding and community
investment funds provide capital for social impact projects, while time banking and mutual aid networks create systems where people exchange services—childcare, home repairs, tutoring—strengthening economic interdependence. The solutions already exist—WE just need to scale them and harness the power of our collective spending. Our Money. Our Power. Our Future.
Every dollar we spend is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in. If we prioritize community over corporations, cooperation over competition, and collective wealth over individual survival, WE can break cycles of economic oppression and build a future where we all thrive.
